Bonita Springs, FL – Bonita Springs City Council unanimously approved the planned unit development for the new active senior living community, Diamond Oaks Village (DOV). On the morning of Wednesday, July 15th, 2015, the Bonita Springs City Council voted in favor of tearing down one of Bonita Springs’ standing landmarks, The Ship, and approved zoning for Troy, NY-based developer, United Group’s, thirteenth independent senior living property. Diamond Oaks Village property will stand in its place.
There has been sizeable controversy about the potential demolition of the city’s iconic landmark anchored at 24080 U.S. 41. The property has been vacant since 2005 and has struggled to find and retain an owner. The Ship has officially been voted to be torn down.
The Ship is a building made to look like a ship, so there is no possibility of relocating it to another location.
“The City Council hearing went the way we expected,” states Tim Haskins, Project Manager at United Development Corporation. “We are excited to proceed with the development of Diamond Oaks.” Haskins was present for the vote.
Diamond Oaks Village is an active senior living community available to adults 55 and over. It will be comprised of two residential buildings built over covered parking, plus a 12,000 square foot, amenity-rich clubhouse. DOV offers 1- and 2-bedroom apartments, in addition to a penthouse level. The apartments will include modern appliances, a private washer and dryer, and will be priced at competitive monthly rates. The community will offer a dog park, putting green, on-site fitness center, and many other features.
The 160-unit community expects the first of two buildings to open in late 2016, early 2017.
